As part of the effort to assemble the Friday Labs, the Wildacres Leadership Initiative (WLI) is pleased to host Tertulias. These informal gatherings are an opportunity for the William C. Friday Fellowship community and our extended networks to gather and discuss ideas, literature, current affairs, share arts and culture, and most importantly, build community.
An upcoming Tertulia will take place on February 13th from 7:00-9:00 PM at
East Columbus Senior Center
2694 General Howe Road
Riegelwood, NC 28456
Sayra Pinto, Director of Leadership Education, will be on hand to welcome you.
This Latin American and Iberian tradition dating back to 16th Century Spain, allows for the flexible sharing of ideas while building connection and a general sense of well being among participants. We will be discussing Peter Block’s Community: The Structure of Belonging and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s “Coalition Politics.”
Community offers the promise of belonging and calls for us to acknowledge our interdependence. To belong is to act as an investor, owner, and creator of this place. To be welcome, even if we are strangers. As if we came to the right place and are affirmed for that choice.
We’ve pretty much come to the end of a time when you can have a space that is “yours only”– just for the people you want to be there… There is no hiding place. There is nowhere you can go and only be with people who are like you. It’s over. Give it up.
These two writings are a part of the recommended reading for Seminar I of the 2017-2019 Friday Fellowship. More information and context about each is available online at our Leadership Library. Click here for more information about the Leadership Library.
You are encouraged and welcome to bring your own poetry, art, literature, and reflections in the spirit of a Tertulia.
While this event is free, we would like know how many people to expect. Please RSVP by February 9.
