Dan Murrey is an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and CEO at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte where he has practiced for 16 years. A Tennessee native, Dan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Davidson College in 1987 with a BA in Religion, and then received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and Master of Public Policy from the JFK School of Government at Harvard University. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Vanderbilt and Spine fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center. In addition to training residents and fellows, he has been active in research on adult spinal deformity and cervical disc replacement, he is a patent-holder and developer of spine care devices in both areas, and he is a member of multiple national orthopedic research and leadership societies. In 2008, after a decade of service in leadership roles in the practice, he was named CEO of OrthoCarolina, one of the largest orthopedic practices in the country with 143 physicians and nearly 1400 employees in North Carolina where he has led efforts in quality improvement, data management, corporate compliance, and customer service. He was a founder and is currently Quality Chairman of the National Orthopedic and Spine Alliance, which is creating the standards for collection and reporting of quality outcomes for orthopedic surgery while reducing healthcare costs to employers and patients. In addition to his role as a physician leader, he completed a two year term of public service as Mecklenburg County Commissioner at-large and recently led Charlotte’s efforts to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He is the founding and current Chairman of the Seventh Street Public Market which incubates food businesses that celebrate the Carolinas food culture and enhance access to healthy foods. He is married to musician Katie Oates and they have two teenage children, Sam and Lucy.
