More Information
Jennifer Nixon is a Rockingham County native and resident who returned to rural North Carolina in 2010 after living in the UK for nearly a decade. She has an academic background, earning an MA in Anthropology from East Carolina University and a PhD in Applied Social Studies from Warwick University, England. She also completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Teaching Higher Education from Oxford Brookes University, England and a post-doctoral Fellowship at Oxford University.

Jennifer’s academic focus has been on the ways in which a mixed economy of services can meet specific instances of health and social needs. Her work has been published in a number of academic journals, including Social Politics, Social Policy & Society, Disability & Society, and Critical Discourse Studies. These publications deal largely with the ways in which a mixed economy of services can meet specific instances of social need. Her areas of study have included disability, domestic violence and services for children at risk, reflecting a personal commitment to addressing issues related to social justice and social responsibility.

Since returning to Rockingham County, she has been involved in developing safety net healthcare services, volunteering at the Free Clinic of Rockingham County and leading the Rockingham County Healthcare Alliance, a network of safety net providers. She has served as executive director of the Healthcare Alliance since its inception in September 2010. The Healthcare Alliance creates, coordinates and expands services for uninsured, low-income residents of Rockingham County. In this role, she is working to broaden local safety net efforts from increasing access to care to improve population health of the most vulnerable and underserved.

She is married to Kris Nixon, Principal for Laser Scanning Services at Meridian Associates. They have two small children, Dane and Isaiah, and are licensed foster parents. When not working on healthcare projects or chasing small people, Jennifer is usually reading or gardening in her spare time.
