Bill Friday in His Own Words: Convening Across Difference
Wednesday, June 20, 2018
Listen to Bill Friday in his own words in this online audio collection.
In this clip --- especially at the 0:24 mark -- hear him relate how a new convening across difference began.
When asked to preside over a new meeting, Dr. Friday recalled a friend saying:
"I want to get [a few] North Carolinians together and just ask them a fundamental question.... I want it to be a very diverse group because...I don't know what the answer is. I'd like to know what you people think."
This is the essence of the Friday Fellowship and Wildacres Leadership Initiative (WLI) -- to convene a group of difference and hear each other's thoughts.
The group may not walk away in agreement on a given matter, but they will walk away in better understanding and in better community with each other as fellow human beings.
In our lives, we often convene around sameness. Networks of sameness are needed and useful.
However, convening around difference is very much needed to sustain community and is often harder to achieve. WLI and the Friday Fellowship work to make it easier to achieve.
Diversity of thought, values, residence, and all other differences the word diversity can conjure will provide an ever better convening of difference.
Repeated convening of these groups over time builds engagement and community.
Listen again to Bill Friday's words about how a convening of difference continued and spawned other gatherings that then addressed the pressing issues of the day.
