Statement from the Wildacres Leadership Initiative (WLI) Board of Advisors
WLI is a program housing the William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations
North Carolina and our nation are again facing an internal crisis, one that has been catalyzed by the death of another black man at the hands of the police and laid bare issues around racial bias, authoritarian brutality, extreme commodification, and the inequities of systems that amplify each.
The Friday Fellowship for Human Relations has long championed justice, fairness, and diversity. Our leadership development program centers relationship building across lines of differences and demands and equips fellows to lead with courage and conviction. Each individual experiences, feels, acts, and leads in their own ways. Our network of more than 200 fellows does this in their own communities, in their professional lives, and across their networks.
This is necessary, but it is not sufficient. We see the breakdown of civility, the intentional disruption of human relations, and the death and destruction that result from systems built to replicate existing inequities.
We call on you - Friday Fellows, friends, family, neighbors, and all North Carolinians - to redouble your efforts.
Reflect on why someone different from you feels unheard.
Raise your voice against injustice, and lead in ways that transform the world we live in.
Continue to hold civility at the forefront, and demand justice for all.
In Ella Baker’s words, “You have to go back and reach out to your neighbors who don’t speak to you.”
The William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations will continue to lead for justice to support all North Carolinians as they strive to create a better North Carolina and a more just nation.
